The Gathering Place (TGP) is a daytime shelter and trauma-informed resource center in Denver, Colorado, one of the least affordable cities in the country. Since 1986, TGP has delivered essential resources to marginalized populations experiencing poverty and homelessness. The mission of TGP is to provide a community of safety and hope where positive relationships, choice, and essential resources transform lives. TGP is a low-barrier shelter addressing impacts of poverty, homelessness, and systemic oppression through trauma-informed programs and essential services to over 4,000 women and gender non-conforming adults, and over 1,000 children each year. TGP’s mission is to provide a community of safety and hope where positive relationships, choice, and essential resources transform lives.
Programs at TGP are designed to address basic needs and support individuals and families on a long-term path to recovery from homelessness and trauma. As a low-barrier shelter, TGP is committed to being accessible to the most vulnerable members of the community. Staff meet people where they are by providing an environment where they can be who they are culturally, physically, and emotionally. For children who may be sleeping in a car or a shelter, or bouncing to different homes doubling up with family or friends, the Family Program at TGP provides a vital source of stability, comfort and fun for children. By offering a nurturing environment and a calm respite from poverty and homelessness, children can play and learn, parents can focus on their own needs, and families can experience togetherness.
The Indigo Oak Fund has provided consistent financial support to TGP’s Family Program since the foundation was launched. Grant funds awarded to TGP have helped ensure that families experiencing homelessness can access basic needs and long-term support to help them on a path to stability. From ensuring access to infant formula during a national shortage, to helping single moms pay the first month’s rent for a new home, TIOF has delivered critical care for this community.
“The first time I visited The Gathering Place I was greeted by a lot of people with very loving smiles, very friendly smiles. The Gathering Place has helped me find not only actual stability – they helped me find my house – but they helped me find emotional stability.” -TGP member and mother
“They’ve been there every step of the way for this homeless journey, helping my family and me with food, with clothing, with anything that I’ve needed. They’ve been there. It feels like a chosen family, like a community.” -TGP member and mother
