One of our 2024 grant recipients, The Rocky Mountain Diaper Depot (RMDD) has been collecting and distributing diapers to low-income families in the Denver metro area through partnerships with non-profit agencies.
The Rocky Mountain Diaper Depot (RMDD) has been raising awareness about the diaper need and providing diapers to low-income families in the Denver metro area since 2014.
With over 60,000 kids in the metro area at the age of five living at or below the poverty level, there are thousands of mothers in our communities struggling to buy enough diapers for their babies. Without enough diapers for routine changes, moms start reusing dirty diapers, creating rashes, health problems and delayed toilet training for their children. When a family has access to donated diapers, their limited resources can then be extended to cover rent, utilities, food and other critical items.
The RMDD is projected to collect and distribute more than 300,000 diapers and 5,000 packs of baby wipes for these families in 2024, and in ten years have collected and shared more than 2,000,000 diapers to babies who desperately need them to maintain clean, dry bottoms.
By developing partnerships with 18 non-profit agencies in Denver, the RMDD can be assured the diapers will get to the babies and toddlers most in need. These organizations include medical clinics, family shelters, housing facilities, food banks with diaper distributions, and social services within local school districts. The largest RMDD distribution partners are Stout Street Health Center, the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, the Denver Inner City Parish, and Integrated Family Community Services.
RMDD has pledged from its first day that as a 100% volunteer non-profit, every dollar donated for diapers and baby wipes would go directly to purchasing these items. As word spread about the RMDD diaper bank, thousands of diapers began arriving each month, making the storage of these items the biggest challenge RMDD faced. For many years the collected diapers were regularly stored and distributed from a collection of spaces in their homes, garages, basements and automobiles by volunteers.
With the generous grant from The Indigo Oak Fund, the RMDD is now able to rent a large storage space that can receive and accept donations of up 80,000 diapers at one time, enabling the small staff of volunteers to work efficiently and safely while putting diaper orders together for distribution. There is no question that this grant has made it possible for many more families to receive diapers consistently, so a sincere thank you to the Indigo Oak Fund for making it possible for the Rocky Mountain Diaper Depot to continue this important work!
